Job Summary

The Nurse Manager, Ambulatory, is responsible for managing, organizing, and supervising the work of clinical support staff, which includes registered nurses (RNs), licensed vocational nurses (LVNs), medical assistants (MAs), and other ancillary support staff. The Nurse Manager oversees staff schedules and coordinates clinical support efforts to ensure that quality standards are met and provided to patients and families. Primary areas of focus include ensuring high quality and safe care, optimization of staffing skill mix and workflows, and ongoing improvement of patient experience. The Nurse Manager has a dual reporting structure to the Practice Administrator and the Manager of Ambulatory Clinical Programs.

Manages the delivery of ambulatory patient care, which typically includes nursing, and may include laboratory, radiology, dental, etc. Facilitates the flow of patient care activities; may also participate in practice or center management operations.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $191,800 - $256,600 (Annual Rate).

Required Qualifications


  • At least 3-5 years of health care management or other direct service with children/adolescents.
  • 2 year of leadership experience (i.e. charge nurse); previous management experience preferred.
  • Experience working with multi ethnic and multidisciplinary staff.
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Sit: up to 8 hours/day
  • Stand/Walk: 3-6 hours
  • Bend/Stoop: Up to 3 hours
  • Reach: Up to 3 hours
  • Rep Use of UE/Grasp: Up to 8 hours
  • Lift/Push/Pull: 15 lbs
  • This job requires the ability to hear alarms clients and/or instruction. The ability to see accurately from 20 inches to 20-ft. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential function of this position.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Master Degree (in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, and/or Business Administration)
  • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Experience with electronic medical records (EPIC preferred).
  • Familiarity with Kronos or other staff scheduling systems.
  • Significant experience in patient care environments.
  • Problem solving skills, people management and leadership skills, and change management skills.
  • Pursues professional development activities to maintain competence and skill set to support role.
  • Maintains an active membership in local and national organizations related to area of practice.
  • Lean Methodology or process improvement experience preferred.

License/Certification


  • Current California RN license
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support Certification
