Job Description

Location Profile:

Headquartered in Irvine, CA, Shur-Lok manufactures fastening systems with superior locking devices for critical requirements including engine module assembly, structural assembly, rotor blade attachment, and aircraft engine shaft and spindle applications. Operations at the Irvine location include CNC Machining, CNC Waterjet Cutting, Laser Marking, Heat Treating, NDT, and EDM.

Position Summary:

The Tool Cutter/Grinder specializes in the construction, repair and maintenance of machine shop tools, dies, jigs, fixture and instruments. Manufacturing of production and prototype rotary cutting tools; plan, design, construct or repair a wide variety of intricate tools, gauges and fixtures to extremely close tolerances 0002., regrind used/dull tools to original sharpness; perform routine maintenance of machines. Operates Lathe/Milling machines, Grinders and other type of machines tools. Works to close tolerance from tool design drawing, sketches, part print or verbal instructions.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Verifies alignment and tolerances of moving parts, using measuring instruments, such as dial indicators and thickness gauges.
  • Improvises minimum cost tooling for one-time or rush jobs for machined and/or fabricated parts with special focus.
  • Reviews and understands blueprints and specifications of die components.
  • Determines the sequence of steps to follow in production of the product and plan the process including where and how to cut the work piece utilizing the correct tools and materials for the job.
  • Develops specifications from general description and draws sketch of part or product for fabrication as required.
  • Operates CNC lathe to turn components, Performs precise cutting of tooling, using various gages and micrometers as required.
  • Troubleshoots and follows-through with solution to problem.
  • Complies with all company safety rules and regulations.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • 4+ years of technical Tool Design Concept and Tool Cutter/Grinder experience.
  • Must have understanding of Drill Geometry and be able to produce complex cutting tools using a variety of grinders.
  • Ability to plan the construction of tooling, working from tool design, part or part print or functional information. Ability to lay out parts in detail from required machining operations.
  • Must be familiar with the general composition of tooling steels, machinability of metals, effect of heat treats on steel.
  • Must be capable of working effectively with minimal direction and supervision.
  • Solid experience in operating a variety of manual and CNC controlled machinery to produce precision parts and components to exact specifications.
  • Manufacturing of production and prototype rotary cutting tools; plan, and design.
  • Ability to lay our parts in detail for required machining operations.
  • Must be familiar with the general composition of tooling steels, machinability of metals, and effect of heat treat on steel.
  • Construct or repair a wide variety of intricate tools, gauges and fixtures to extremely close tolerances 0002.
  • Regrind used/dull tools to original sharpness; perform routine maintenance of machines.
  • Ability to review and understand engineering drawings, customer provided part drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished parts, sequence of operations and set up requirements.
  • Ability to understand and use the dispatch list to effectively schedule work and assign jobs to department personnel; ability to match the skills of the employee to the requirements of the job when assigning work; ability to "flex" individual operators among various jobs, as needed.
  • Manufacturing and Machine shop experience.
  • Mathematical Skill - Demonstrate the ability to work with mathematical concepts such as fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
  • Blueprint Reading & Interpretation - Demonstrate the ability to reliably read and interpret the following: drawing terms; call outs; symbols and/or descriptions; types of lines; front view; side view; top view; section view; types of radii; tolerances (min. and max.); external thread; internal thread; surface finish; fastener-related specifications.
  • Basic Visual & Dimensional Inspection - Demonstrate the ability to inspect parts reliably using the following tools: caliper (dial and digital); micrometer (stand, blade, and disk); dial drop indicator; test indicator; comparator; pin gage; gage block set; any functional gages applicable to the operator.
  • Workmanship - Demonstrate the ability to identify and take appropriate action to prevent, correct, or reject the following conditions on die and tools parts: cracks; nicks, scratches and dents.
  • Communication - Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with team members to achieve cooperation and assistance needed to resolve problems and attain maximum productivity.

Education

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) or equivalent.
  • Degree and/or Certificate in Machine Shop Technology or a Certification/Degree in a related field preferred.

For informational purposes only, the range of pay for this role is $21 to $31.50 US Dollar (USD) Hourly based on a variety of factors. For informational purposes only, this role is eligible to participate in the Company's Quarterly Cash Bonus Plan, paid out at the quarterly bonus factor of 1X the Company's bonus multiple, based on the Company's performance in the applicable quarter . Employees will receive 80 hours paid time off every year. Employees will also receive 10 paid holidays. Employees (and their families) are eligible to participate in the company's medical, dental, vision, and basic life insurance. Employees are eligible to enroll in the Company's 401(k) plan.
