Trauma Performance Improvement Coordinator

GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Trauma Performance Improvement Coordinator assists the Bryan Trauma Center in providing excellent trauma care by collaborating with the trauma team through clinical, research and performance improvement activities; conducts concurrent performance improvement appraisals, performs trauma data extracting, data entry, collection and data reporting. Assists the Trauma Program Manager and Trauma Medical Director Coordinate all aspects of the Trauma Service.

PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.

2. *Coordinates and maintains the design and development of the performance improvement/quality improvement plan for the Trauma program from issue identification through loop closure/resolution.

3. *Conducts concurrent performance appraisals on all trauma patient records; provides follow-up and intervention on problems/issues identified during trauma audits to referral hospitals and EMS providers.

4. *Clinical data abstraction from the medical records of trauma patients for the purpose of data submission, injury research, epidemiology, quality improvement initiatives to improve trauma care.

5. *In conjunction with the Trauma Program Manager, evaluates the trauma care process for efficacy, quality, safety and effectiveness of standards and protocols.

6. *Collaborates with departmental personnel regarding data and coordinates information/creates reports specific to quality improvement.

7. Designs reports and graphs; prepares and clearly articulates reports of quality improvement activities as assigned.

8. Attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested; assists with trauma outreach activities to referral facilities related to education, site visits and performance improvement activities.

9. Participates in continuing education, reads trauma-related periodicals/literature, and seeks ongoing professional development opportunities; maintains professional affiliations.

10. *Serves as a consultant and liaison between Trauma services and clinical, ancillary and support services within Bryan Medical Center

11. *Facilitates collaborative and meaningful discussions with multiple providers and disciplines to improve care for the trauma patient

12. *Coordinates care with various disciplines and ensures that protocols, processes, and care are implemented for the trauma patient

13. *Collaborates with the Clinical Resource Nurses/Clinical Educators to provide ongoing access to coordinated high quality trauma education offerings to all team members of the trauma center

14. *Rounds and interacts with patients and families to facilitate communication with the Trauma Team on trauma care issues and discharge planning; serves as a patient advocate

15. *Monitors trauma care rendered to identify problems and trends in the trauma care and compliances with the Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP) and Performance Improvement Plan

16. Develops and coordinates trauma education for clinical, ancillary and support services; conducts in-services on trauma center requirements, team roles, standards, protocols and procedures.

17. Participates in code traumas as needed; makes rounds with the trauma team as needed and as called upon within current scope of professional practice.

18. *Participates in morning trauma rounds and multi-disciplinary rounds Monday-Friday to assess the needs, variances & complications of all trauma patients

19. Participates in multi-disciplinary case reviews and assists with the coordination and presentation of case reviews as needed

20. *Provide regular reports to the Trauma Program Manager and Trauma Medical Director with recommendations to address quality issues; utilizing evidence-based best practice, research etc.

21. Coordinates post-trauma resuscitation critiques to evaluate the delivery of care and identify barriers to the delivery of efficient trauma care. Provides staff follow up on identified concerns and problems.

22. Demonstrates behaviors consistent with Bryan's mission and beliefs statements.

23. Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Knowledge of current theory and clinical practices related to trauma and trauma prevention.

2. Ability to apply knowledge of the nursing process to trauma patients to ensure appropriate care.

3. Knowledge of current literature, issues, trends, treatment and prevention of trauma.

4. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.

5. Knowledge of trauma regulations and procedures appropriate in the administration of patient care.

6. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions necessary to establish a safe work environment.

7. Knowledge of local, state and federal regulations related to nursing.

8. Knowledge of data abstraction, data management and statistical analysis.

9. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

10. Ability to organize and utilize time and resources in an effective manner.

11. Ability to maintain confidentiality relevant to sensitive information.

12. Ability to support and maintain performance and quality improvement initiatives.

13. Ability to prepare and maintain records, written reports and respond to correspondence using a computer.

14. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment related to changing patient needs including working with patients with acute, chronic and complex disease processes and those who are dying.

15. Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Current Registered Nurse licensure from the State of Nebraska or approved compact state of residence as defined by the Nebraska Nurse Practice Act required. Minimum of three (3) years clinical nursing experience

OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS:

Certification in Basic Life Support (CPR), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required. Trauma Nursing Care Course (TNCC) Instructor within first year of employment required. Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses (ATCN) Instructor within first year of employment required. Successful Completion of Trauma Outcomes & Performance Improvement Course (TOPIC) within first year of hire.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
